Biography

Professor M. K. Surappa is the Director of Indian Institute of Technology Ropar and also Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is on leave of absence from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore where he is Professor in the Department of Materials Engineering.

Professor Surappa is an alumnus of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. After completing his doctoral work, he worked at Drexel University (USA), Cavendish Laboratory (UK), and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Switzerland). He has published more than 100 research papers and obtained three patents in the field of Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs). He has received several awards including Rustom Chokshi Award for Excellence in Research in Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science and the Suvarna Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in the field of Science and Technology from the Government of Karnataka.

His research interests include solidification processing of metal matrix composites and tribology. He is also deeply interested in the application of science and technology to societal issues.
