The IDEAs Laboratory
Interface Dynamics and Energetics of Alloys

About the IDEAs Laboratory

At the IDEAs laboratory, we focus on understanding the interface dynamics and energetics of alloys, and sometimes, ceramics. Interfaces play a very important role in materials processing and performance. Our goal is to observe, quantify and model the interfacial phenomena during processing and performance in order to develop novel materials.

We study a variety of materials of engineering importance such as metallic glasses (as precursors for nanocrystalline solids), high temperature alloys (for power generation and aeroengines) and ceramics (for hypersonic applications). In addition to these materials, we study an assortment of model systems in order to answer the fundamental scientific questions arising from our applied research.

News and Spotlight

The IDEAs group is seeking motivated students for PhD positions starting in the Spring 2020 semester. The thesis problems available within the group are broadly in the area of (i) solid-liquid interfaces, with a focus on solidification / metallic glasses and (ii) gas-solid and solid-solid interfaces, with a focus on phase selection and oxidation behavior of multi-principal element alloys.

2019-JULY-09: Pratik will be giving a talk at ISMANAM-2019 titled "Metastable surprises in multicomponent systems: balancing enthalpy, entropy and defects with kinetics".

2019-JUNE-11: The Principal Investigator for the IDEAs labratory, Pratik K. Ray, joins Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Ropar.
