Inauguration of Open Air Day Sports

The open Air day sports was inaugurated on 2-11-2014 at 4 PM by Prof.Javagal K Sridhar, Registrar of IIT Ropar. The aim of this small function was many folded.  Firstly it was conducted to show case the talents that our boys possess  and at the same time to encourage them to consolidate and improve their talents. Secondly to identify all the deficiencies that needed to be addressed.  Thirdly ,  this event was some what a preparation to inter IIT sports meet in IIT Bombay very very soon.

I myself was a witness to our boy's performance. I should say, it was a glorious one. Most of the boys have already been selected for participation in Inter IIT meet. I am very confident that many of our boys will succeed. There are very good chances that we win more medals than last year. To me, even just mere participation is a pride thing let alone winning or loosing which is always a temporary event.

During inauguration, Prof.Sridhar emphasized the benefits of sports especially the following:

* Physical activity stimulates growth and leads to improved physical and emotional health.

* Less likely to suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer of the colon, obesity and coronary heart disease later in life

* Regular exercise relieve from stress, anxiety, depression.

* Regular sports improves blood circulation which carry oxygen to all parts of the body. This is essential for healthy growth of cells especially memory cells in brain. It has been proved that those who play sports  are sharper in memory and  particularly in arithmetic/mathematics.

* Sports is not just simply an exercise, but it is more than physical well being, it contributes to one's development psychologically and socially

* Lastly but not the least, it develops bonding between fellow participants

* It is essential to to eat or drink before, during and after sports so that one does not suffer from dehydration

Registrar also stressed that keeping and practising good  food habits is an essential part of healthy  growth. In Europe, sports is part of education right from the age of 3 when they start going to school. Swimming, jogging, skating, summer and winter sports are a common affair.

As a show case of multi talents, our boys showed their skills in various gymnastic events. It was interesting to see that some girls even participated in hand wrestling.

All winners were awarded with simple prizes (fruits and juices) and not the familiar metallic pieces.

The function ended with vote of thanks to every one.
