1.0 About the Act

A citizen has a right to seek such information from a public authority which is held by the public authority or which is held under its control. This right includes inspection of work, documents and records; taking notes, extracts or certified copies of documents or records; and taking certified samples of material held by the public authority or held under the control of the public authority. It is important to note that only such information can be supplied under the Act that is available and existing and is held by the public authority or is held under the control of the public authority. The Public Information Officer is not supposed to create information that is not a part of the record of the public authority. The Public Information Officer is also not required to furnish information which require drawing of inference and/or making of assumptions; or to interpret information; or to solve the problems raised by the applicants; or to furnish replies to hypothetical questions.

2.0About Organization:


2.1Name: Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, Rupnagar-140001, Punjab

2.2 Particulars of Organization:

(1) Objective of the Institute:

The primary objective of the Indian Institutes of Technology is to provide scientists and technologists of the highest caliber who would engage in research, design and development to help building the nation towards self-reliance in her technological needs.

(2) Brief history of the Institute:

Indian Institute of Technology Ropar at Rupnagar, Punjab has established a reputation, both nationally and internationally, for excellence in Technical Education, Research and Consultancy. IIT Ropar is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research.

The town of Ropar (also known as Rupnagar) is of great historical importance. The excavations carried out at Rupnagar have proved that this town was the seat of well developed Indus Valley Civilization. In proto-Historic Punjab, perhaps Rupnagar is the only known excavation site which can claim the status of a small town or city. The founds in recent excavations consist of earthen bears, statues, coins etc. The city dates back to Harappa- Mohenjo-Daro civilization located east of Satluj river. The excavated artifacts belong to Chandra Gupta, Kushan, Hoon and Mughal period. Ropar is nested on the foothills of the Shivalik ranges. The weather of Ropar is generally dry with four distinct seasons. It experiences hot summers & cold winters. The city is very close to Sri Anandpur Sahib, The birthplace of Sikhism & several scenic hill stations of Himachal Pradesh.

The Institute has eleven academic departments and a few advanced research centres in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences. A faculty of international repute, a brilliant student community, excellent technical & supporting staff and an effective administration have all contributed to the pre-eminent status of IIT Ropar. The campus is located in the city of Rupnagar, located around 40 km to Chandigarh.

2.3Organizational Structure:

The Director is the principal academic and executive officer of the Institute. He reports to the Board of Governors. The Chairman of the Board executes the contract between the Director and the Institute. The Director is ex-officio Chairman of the Senate. The Senate comprising all the professors of the Institute decides the academic policy of the Institute. The Director is assisted in the management of the affairs of the Institute by Deans, Associate Deans and the Registrar.

The various academic departments in the institute offer course based degree programmes and also degree programmes that are inclined towards research. The following courses based degree programmes are offered by the departments:

3.0Functions:

3.1Power and duties of Officers and Employees:

Director is the Principal Academic and Executive Officer of the Institute. The Director shall be responsible for the proper administration of the Institute and for the imparting of the instruction and maintenance of discipline therein. The Director has the power to incur expenditure in accordance with the procedure as may be laid by the Board/MHRD from time to time.

Deans shall assist the Director in academic and administrative work and maintaining liaison with Institution of higher learning and research.

Registrar is the custodian of records, funds of Institute and such other properties of the Institute.

Other officers and staff of the Institute assume powers, responsibilities and duties as assigned to them from time to time by the Director.
