Seminar in Mathematics Department

Title: DIMENSIONS

 Location: L3

 Date: 8th October, 2012

 Time    3.00 pm - 4:00 pm

 Abstract:

This talk will be all about the looking at higher dimensional objects. In particular we will have a journey to fourth dimension. Starting from how our blue planet can be projected on to the Complex plane, we will move towards more and more complicated objects up to the regular polyhedral in dimension 4. We will show 4 animated video lectures, each 13 minutes long.
The details of each video is as follows:
1. Video 1 : Here our speaker will be Hipparchus, founder of trigonometry. He shows us how to describe the position of any point on Earth with two numbers and explains the stereographic projection (how to draw a map of the world).
2. Video 2 : Here our speaker will be M C Escher, Dutch graphic artist. He will talk about the adventures of two-dimensional creatures trying to imagine what three- dimensional objects look like.
3. Video 3 and 4 : Here mathematician Ludwig Schlai talks about objects that live in fourth dimensions and shows a parade of four- dimensional polytopes, strange objects with 24, 120 and even 200 faces!

Higher Secondary Mathematics.

Credits : Dimensions: A walk through mathematics! is a French project that makes educational movies about mathematics. These animated videos are the collaboration of three enthusiasts namely Jos Leys, Etienne Ghys and Aurelien Alvarez.
