The Indian Institute of Technology at Ropar, Punjab, is one of the eight new IITs that have been started by the government of India during 2008–2009. The aim is to provide a world-class education at the undergraduate and the postgraduate levels in various branches of engineering and the sciences. Over the years, the IITs have emerged as one of the most respected technical institutions worldwide and the IIT brand is very valuable in its own right. I feel that there is no need to talk about the contributions made by the IITs to both India and to the world, as these contributions are very evident. Talking about our IIT, what is commendable is that in such short time duration, IIT Ropar has made a very good name for itself. It boasts of very capable students and faculty. Most of the faculty members have come armed with global experience, having done their PhDs and post-docs from prestigious international universities from the USA, Canada and Europe, as well as from reputed institutions in India. At IIT Ropar, we teach our students to be good human beings, in addition to excelling academically. Students are given the opportunity to work on real-life projects that enhance their classroom learning and teach them the art of working in teams. They are taught the importance of communication skills and using 'out of the box' thinking to solve real-world problems.
