About Department of Biomedical Engineering

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (DBME) was established on February 2021 by superseding the Center for Biomedical Engineering (CBME) program, established earlier in May 2013.

The main goal of DBME is to meet the challenges of affordable healthcare facing the nation by encouraging research and entrepreneurship in interdisciplinary areas, encompassing engineering, medical sciences, and natural sciences. The center has following focus areas of research: Biomedical Imaging; Medical Devices; Cancer Diagnostics and Therapy; Biomaterials; and Tissue Engineering. Because of the diverse research backgrounds of our faculty, there is a strong thrust on interdisciplinary research at the center. Going forward, the center seeks collaboration with national and international universities/institutes and partnership with industries to realize its goals.

As far as academic programs are concerned, the center is offering BTech (minor), MTech, and PhD in Biomedical Engineering degrees. Since its inception, center is organizing the Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series and supporting summer interns / undergraduate research projects for students at the institute and from outside of it.

The department also encourages you to use the existing laboratory facilities for your research work, with prior permission of the HOD, DBME.

Message from HoD

The DBME at IIT Ropar is an interdisciplinary academic unit with outstanding faculty, who are actively engaged in teaching and research in the areas of biomedical imaging; biomedical-photonics; medical devices; cancer diagnostics and therapy; biomaterials and tissue engineering and others. We are currently offering PhD, M.Tech in Biomedical Engineering and B. Tech minor programs. Our aim is to train future scientists and leaders to meet the ever growing demand of biomedical scientists in government, academia, and medical devices industry in India and abroad. To achieve this, we provide rigorous graduate-level training (with hands- on laboratory exposure) to students in core as well as cutting edge areas of biomedical engineering.

Students coming out of our programs are proficient in applying principles of engineering and computational methods to healthcare challenges. We look forward to working with industry partners on student placements. Please contact us with your queries or schedule a visit to our campus.
