Dr. Pratik K. Ray obtained his Bachelor's degree from National Institute of Technology Rourkela, following which he obtained a Master's degree from Indian Institute of Technology Madras, during which he developed a synergistic model for glass formation. He obtained his doctoral degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Iowa State University, working on processing and oxidation of Mo-Si-B and NiAl-Mo alloys. After his PhD, he first worked as a post-doctoral researcher and then as a scientist at Ames Laboratory, conducting research on High-Temperature Alloys, Undercooled Liquids and High Entropy Alloys. From August 2017 onwards, he also served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Iowa State University.
At IIT Ropar, Dr. Ray's research will focus on interfacial phenomena during materials processing and degradation. Modeling and in-situ observation of the evolution of the solid-solid, solid-liquid or solid-vapor interfaces is critical for predictive synthesis of novel alloys, or predicting the degradation processes in extreme evironments. The focus on engineering applications is centered around materials for hypersonic environments - especially ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs), materials for power generation and aeroengines (superalloys, aluminides, coatings), multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) for energy applications and metallic glasses as precursors for nanostructured materials.
