                <text>The Department of Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) was established in 2009, during the formative years of the Institute. From its beginning, the department was envisioned as a centre for high-quality education and interdisciplinary research in chemical sciences. It started with a small team of four faculty members and three Ph.D. students and has subsequently grown into a significant academic and research unit of IIT Ropar.&#13;
&#13;
Major Milestones&#13;
2009 – Establishment: The Department of Chemistry was established in 2009 with the objective of imparting quality education and conducting cutting-edge interdisciplinary research in emerging areas of chemical science.&#13;
2009 – Initial Faculty and Research Scholars: During its formative period, the department began with four faculty members and three Ph.D. students. IIT Ropar's Digital Archive records early Chemistry faculty, including Prof. B. D. Gupta and Dr. Narinder Singh, in the department's 2009 institutional records.&#13;
Early Academic Development: From its initial years, Chemistry played an important role in supporting the Institute's engineering education by providing foundational chemistry courses to undergraduate students. The department continues to support the B.Tech. programmes across several engineering disciplines.&#13;
Ph.D. Programme: Since its inception, the department has offered a Ph.D. programme in Chemistry, providing opportunities for advanced research in diverse areas of chemical sciences.&#13;
2015 – Introduction of M.Sc. Programme: A major milestone was the introduction of the two-year M.Sc. Chemistry programme in the 2015–16 academic session. Students are admitted through the Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM).&#13;
Expansion of Research Areas: Over the years, the department has developed research programmes in diverse areas including biomaterials, biosensors, catalysis, drug delivery, materials chemistry, organometallic chemistry, renewable energy, supramolecular synthesis, synthetic organic chemistry and theoretical chemistry.&#13;
Growth of Research Community: The department has expanded considerably from its initial strength. The department's official profile records 15 regular faculty members, more than 80 Ph.D. students and 8 post-doctoral fellows.&#13;
Research Infrastructure: The department has developed state-of-the-art research facilities to support advanced experimental and interdisciplinary research. Its research activities are supported through several sponsored national and international research projects.&#13;
Research Publications and Collaborations: The department has built an extensive research profile, with more than 1,000 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, along with collaborations with universities and research institutes in India and abroad.&#13;
&#13;
Academic Events and Outreach: The department regularly organizes seminars, conferences, workshops and academic events. Among its notable activities was its hosting of the 58th Annual Convention of Chemists of the Indian Chemical Society in 2021, focused on recent trends in chemical sciences and environmental chemistry.&#13;
Present Academic Focus: The department currently offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes and continues to support the Institute's B.Tech. programmes through foundational and elective chemistry courses. Its research spans a broad spectrum of modern chemical sciences and &#13;
interdisciplinary technologies.</text>

                <text>The Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) was formally planned as a new academic department in 2016, with academic activities commencing from July 2016. IIT Ropar announced that the first academic programmes would be B.Tech. in Civil Engineering and Ph.D.&#13;

Major milestones:&#13;

2016 – Establishment: The Department of Civil Engineering came into existence in 2016. Its initial academic focus included B.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes.&#13;
&#13;
Initial academic vision: From the beginning, the B.Tech. curriculum was designed to provide broad exposure to traditional areas of civil engineering—including materials, structures, water resources, environmental engineering, soil mechanics and foundations, transportation and geomatics—while emphasizing engineering sciences and problem-solving.&#13;
&#13;
2018–19: The department had 90 B.Tech. students, 15 Ph.D. scholars and 2 postdoctoral/NPDF researchers, with 14 faculty members. Its research thrust areas included hydraulics and water resources, structural, geotechnical, environmental, transportation and geomatics engineering.&#13;
&#13;
Expansion of postgraduate education: IIT Ropar currently offers two M.Tech. specializations under Civil Engineering: Water Resources and Environment and Structural Engineering and Geomechanics.&#13;
&#13;
Research and consultancy: The department has developed research and consultancy activities involving government and private-sector organizations. IIT Ropar's placement material notes industrial collaborations and research/consultancy projects valued at more than ₹5 crore at the time of that publication.&#13;
&#13;
Present focus: The department's areas now encompass structural engineering, transportation, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, water resources, smart infrastructure and sustainable construction technologies.&#13;

Current academic status: Civil Engineering continues to be one of IIT Ropar's B.Tech. programmes, alongside its postgraduate and doctoral programmes.</text>
