Department of Physics

Title

Department of Physics

Description

The Department of Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) was established in 2009, during the formative years of the Institute. From its beginning, the department has focused on excellence in fundamental science, teaching and research, while developing strong connections with emerging areas of technology and interdisciplinary research.
Major Milestones
• 2009 – Establishment: The Department of Physics was established in 2009, shortly after IIT Ropar began its academic journey. It was created to provide a strong foundation in physics education and to develop advanced research in fundamental and applied areas of physics.
• 2009 – Initial Faculty: During the formative period, the department had a small group of faculty members. The IIT Ropar Digital Archive records Dr. Subhendu Sarkar and Dr. Shubhrangshu Dasgupta as Assistant Professors in Physics during the Institute's early years.
• 2009–10 – Early Academic Development: In its initial years, Physics contributed to the academic foundation of IIT Ropar by providing physics education to undergraduate engineering students while simultaneously developing its research activities.
• Early Research Development: The department gradually established research activities in areas including condensed matter physics, materials science, quantum optics, photonics, nuclear physics and theoretical physics.
• Growth of Academic Programmes: Over the years, the department expanded its academic portfolio beyond foundational undergraduate teaching to include M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes, providing opportunities for advanced education and research.
• Development of Engineering Physics: The department became associated with the development of IIT Ropar's B.Tech. programme in Engineering Physics, providing students with an interdisciplinary education combining fundamental physics with engineering and technological applications.
• Expansion of Research Areas: Research activities have expanded considerably into areas such as Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science, Gravity and String Theory, Light-Matter Interaction, Quantum Information, Nuclear and Particle Physics, Nanophotonics, Quantum Materials and Energy Materials.
• Research Infrastructure: The department has developed modern experimental and computational facilities to support research in areas such as quantum science, photonics, nanomaterials, nuclear physics, condensed matter physics and materials research.
• Interdisciplinary Research: Physics has increasingly contributed to interdisciplinary research at IIT Ropar, connecting fundamental science with materials science, energy technologies, nanotechnology, quantum technologies, biomedical applications and advanced engineering.
• Growth of Faculty and Research Community: From its small initial faculty base, the department has grown into a substantial research community with faculty working across theoretical and experimental physics. Its present faculty research includes quantum information, quantum photonics, spintronics, experimental nuclear physics, renewable-energy materials, nanophotonics, high-energy physics and quantum materials.
• International and Interdisciplinary Collaboration: The department has developed academic and research collaborations with institutions in India and abroad. It also has adjunct faculty associated with internationally recognized institutions, strengthening its research and academic network.
• Present Academic Focus: Today, the Department of Physics offers B.Tech. in Engineering Physics, M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes, while supporting the broader undergraduate curriculum of the Institute. Its research spans both fundamental and applied physics, with particular emphasis on condensed matter and materials science, quantum information, light-matter interaction, photonics, nuclear and particle physics and emerging quantum technologies.
