Department of Mathematics

Title

Department of Mathematics

Description

The Department of Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) was established in 2009, during the formative years of the Institute. From its inception, the department has been committed to providing high-quality education in mathematical sciences and promoting interdisciplinary research in both Pure and Applied Mathematics.
Major Milestones
• 2009 – Establishment: The Department of Mathematics was established in 2009 with the mission of advancing interdisciplinary research and providing high-quality education in emerging areas of mathematical sciences.
• 2009–10 – Early Academic Development: During the department's formative period, Mathematics was closely integrated with IIT Ropar's early academic activities. The 2009–10 Annual Report records Dr. Daya Ram Gaur as Head of the Department, with Dr. M. Prabhakar and Dr. Manoranjan Mishra serving as Assistant Professors. Their research areas included topology, knot theory and fluid dynamics.
• 2010 – Ph.D. Programme: The department began its Ph.D. programme in 2010, marking an important step in establishing a strong research culture in mathematical sciences.
• Expansion of Research: Over the years, the department developed research expertise across a broad range of areas, including Algebra, Fluid Dynamics, Functional Analysis, Operator Theory, Matrix Analysis, Low-dimensional Topology, Mathematical Finance, Numerical Analysis, Mathematical Modelling, Nonlinear Dynamics, Mathematical Biology, Number Theory, Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations and Probability Theory.
• 2015 – M.Sc. Programme: The department introduced the M.Sc. programme in Mathematics in 2015, providing students with opportunities to study both pure and applied areas of mathematics.
• 2017 – Mathematics Minor: From the 2017 B.Tech. batch onwards, the department began offering a Minor Programme in Mathematics to B.Tech. students, enabling students from different engineering disciplines to pursue additional study in mathematics.
• 2019–20 – B.Tech. Mathematics and Computing: A major milestone was the introduction of the four-year B.Tech. programme in Mathematics and Computing from the academic year 2019–20. This programme strengthened the integration of mathematical sciences with computing and emerging technological applications.
• Growth of Academic and Research Community: The department has expanded substantially from its early years and now has a large community of faculty members, students and research scholars. It also hosts postdoctoral fellows and attracts students and researchers from other institutions for short-term research projects and internships.
• Research and Interdisciplinary Collaboration: The department has developed into a hub for collaborative research, with mathematical methods being applied to areas such as engineering, science, finance, biology, fluid mechanics, traffic modelling and computational problems.
• Academic Workshops and Outreach: The department regularly organizes workshops, seminars and academic programmes in specialized areas of mathematics. Recent activities have included workshops on Integral Equations, Function Spaces and Operator Theory, Numerical Algorithms and Scientific Computing, Spectral Graph Theory, and Probabilistic Methods in Graph Theory and Combinatorics.
• Development of Research Infrastructure: The department has established facilities supporting mathematical research, computing, collaborative activities and academic interaction, strengthening its role as a research-oriented department within IIT Ropar.
• Present Academic Focus: The department currently offers Ph.D., M.Sc. and B.Tech. in Mathematics and Computing programmes, along with a Mathematics Minor for B.Tech. students. It also provides core and elective mathematics courses across various B.Tech. programmes.
