Department of Biomedical Engineering

Title

Department of Biomedical Engineering

Description

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (DBME), IIT Ropar has its roots in an interdisciplinary Biomedical Engineering (BME) initiative that began in 2011. The initiative brought together faculty from engineering, science, and medical disciplines, with collaborations involving PGIMER, Chandigarh and other institutions. The BME initiative subsequently developed into the Centre for Biomedical Engineering (CBME) in May 2013, and the Centre was later upgraded to the Department of Biomedical Engineering (DBME) in February 2021.
Major Milestones
• 2011 – Beginning of the Biomedical Engineering initiative:
The foundation of Biomedical Engineering at IIT Ropar can be traced to August 2011, when the Institute began offering BME-related courses such as Advanced Image Processing, Biology for Engineers, and Molecular, Cellular and Tissue Biomechanics. The first undergraduate-level BME course, Biomechanics, was introduced in the following semester.
• 2011 – Development of interdisciplinary research:
IIT Ropar faculty working in biomechanics, medical imaging, neuroscience, biomaterials and related areas began coming together as an interdisciplinary BioGroup. Collaboration with PGIMER, Chandigarh emerged as an important component, particularly in biomedical research involving bone fracture healing and related medical applications.
• 2012 – Expansion of academic and research activities:
Biomedical Engineering activities expanded through research collaborations, specialized courses and interactions with medical researchers. The initiative also became one of the earliest examples at IIT Ropar of integrating engineering education with biological and medical sciences.
• 2013 – Establishment of the Centre for Biomedical Engineering:
The interdisciplinary BME initiative developed into the Centre for Biomedical Engineering (CBME) in May 2013. The Centre provided an institutional framework for multidisciplinary teaching, research and collaboration in biomedical engineering.
• 2013–2014 – Development of infrastructure:
The BME programme established common laboratory facilities and initiated procurement of specialized biomedical research equipment. A dedicated BME website was created in January 2014, while plans for a formal Centre for Biomedical Engineering were advanced during February 2014.
• 2015–2016 – Strengthening of biomedical research:
The Institute's annual report for 2015–16 identified Biomedical Engineering as one of IIT Ropar's interdisciplinary centres, alongside the Centre for Materials & Energy Engineering.
• 2017–2018 – Recognition as an important interdisciplinary centre:
The IIT Ropar Annual Report 2017–18 listed the Centre for Biomedical Engineering among the Institute's major interdisciplinary centres.
• February 2021 – Department of Biomedical Engineering established:
The Centre for Biomedical Engineering was superseded by the Department of Biomedical Engineering (DBME) in February 2021, marking the transition of biomedical engineering from an interdisciplinary centre/programme into a full academic department.
• Present academic programmes:
DBME currently offers a B.Tech. Minor in Biomedical Engineering, M.Tech. in Biomedical Engineering and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering.
• Current research focus:
The department works in areas including Biomedical Imaging, Medical Devices, Cancer Diagnostics and Therapy, Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering, Biomedical Photonics, Biomechanics and related interdisciplinary healthcare technologies.
