Title
Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
Description
The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MME) at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) was established in November 2017 by upgrading the Centre for Materials and Energy Engineering. The establishment of the department marked an important step in strengthening IIT Ropar's academic and research activities in metallurgy, materials science, advanced materials and energy-related technologies.
Major Milestones
• Before 2017 – Centre for Materials and Energy Engineering: Prior to becoming a full-fledged department, materials and energy-related research at IIT Ropar was carried out through the Centre for Materials and Energy Engineering, which provided the foundation for the later development of the MME department.
• November 2017 – Establishment of MME: The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering was established in November 2017 by upgrading the Centre for Materials and Energy Engineering. This was a significant milestone in the expansion of IIT Ropar's academic departments.
• 2018–19 – Beginning of Academic Programmes: Following its establishment, the department started offering the four-year B.Tech. programme and Ph.D. programme from the academic year 2018–19.
• Development of Academic Foundation: The department developed its curriculum around fundamental areas of metallurgical and materials engineering, including physical metallurgy, mechanical metallurgy, process/extractive metallurgy, materials characterization and materials processing.
• Expansion into Advanced Materials: With the growth of the department, academic and research activities expanded into functional materials, energy materials, nanomaterials, polymers, composites, ceramics and advanced engineering materials.
• Research and Innovation: The department has developed research programmes in areas such as advanced steels and alloys, fracture mechanics, process metallurgy, corrosion, high-temperature materials, biomaterials, nanostructured materials and materials informatics.
• Advanced Research Facilities: Research infrastructure has been developed through specialized laboratories dealing with metallography, heat treatment, energy and environment, nanostructured and optical materials, steel research and interface dynamics and energetics of alloys.
• Interdisciplinary Research: The department has established strong connections with other disciplines, particularly in areas involving energy, manufacturing, nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, computational materials science and advanced materials.
• Materials Engineering: The department has expanded its academic focus beyond conventional metallurgy toward modern materials engineering. Its work encompasses the relationship between processing, structure, properties and performance of metals, alloys, polymers, ceramics, biomaterials, composites, smart materials and nanomaterials.
• Present Academic Programmes: The department currently offers B.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes, while postgraduate education has also expanded through its M.Tech. in Materials Engineering programme.
• Present Research Focus: The department's major areas include Physical Metallurgy, Extractive/Process Metallurgy, Mechanical Metallurgy, Energy Materials, Functional Materials and advanced materials-related research.
