Electrical Engineering Department

Title

Electrical Engineering Department

Description

The Department of Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) is one of the founding academic departments of the Institute. The department began its academic journey with the establishment of IIT Ropar in 2008. Electrical Engineering was one of the three disciplines in which IIT Ropar initially offered its B.Tech. programme, along with Computer Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Major Milestones
2008 – Establishment: The Department of Electrical Engineering was established with the inception of IIT Ropar. It was among the first three B.Tech. disciplines offered by the Institute.

2008–09 – First Academic Session: IIT Ropar started its first academic session from the campus of IIT Delhi, its mentor institute. The initial B.Tech. programme in Electrical Engineering admitted students through the IIT Joint Entrance Examination.

2009 – Transit Campus at Rupnagar: IIT Ropar began operating from its transit campus at the premises of the Government Polytechnic College for Women, Rupnagar, from August 2009. The Electrical Engineering department developed its academic activities along with the expansion of the Institute.

Early Faculty Development: During the formative years, the department established its faculty and academic foundation. The IIT Ropar Digital Archive records Dr. Parthapratim De as an Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering in 2009, reflecting the department's early faculty development.

Expansion of Academic Programmes: With the growth of the Institute, the department expanded beyond its undergraduate programme to postgraduate and doctoral education, strengthening its role in advanced teaching and research.

Development of Core Areas: The undergraduate programme evolved around four broad areas of Electrical Engineering: communication technology, control technology, electronics, and power & energy.

Postgraduate Education: The department developed M.Tech. education in specialized areas including Signal Processing and Communication, Power Engineering and VLSI, providing opportunities for advanced study and research.

Research Expansion: Over the years, research activities expanded into areas such as renewable energy, power systems, high-voltage engineering, communication, signal and image processing, computer vision, medical image processing, nano-optics and photonics, VLSI, nanoelectronics and semiconductor devices.

Research and Innovation: The department has continued to upgrade its experimental and computational facilities to support research, development and consultancy activities, while promoting interdisciplinary research and technological innovation.

Present Academic Focus: Today, the department offers B.Tech., M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes and has developed a broad research ecosystem covering electrical power, communication, electronics, signal processing, VLSI, semiconductor technologies and emerging interdisciplinary areas.
