Title
Department of Chemical Engineering
Description
The Department of Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) was established in the academic year 2017–18. It was created with the objective of developing strong academic and research capabilities in chemical engineering and preparing engineers to contribute to emerging chemical industries in India and around the world.
Major Milestones
• 2017 – Establishment: The Department of Chemical Engineering was introduced at IIT Ropar in the academic year 2017–18. The department began with a focus on both undergraduate education and advanced research.
• 2017–18 – Beginning of Academic Programmes: The department commenced its B.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes, providing students with opportunities for undergraduate education as well as doctoral research.
• Initial Research Foundation: During its formative years, the department developed expertise in major areas of chemical engineering including fluid mechanics, transport phenomena, thermodynamics, catalysis and chemical reaction engineering.
• Emerging Research Areas: From its inception, the department emphasized interdisciplinary and emerging research areas such as complex fluid mechanics, scientific computing, granular materials, biomass conversion, renewable energy, biophysics, catalysis and reaction kinetics.
• 2019 – M.Tech. Programme: The department expanded its postgraduate education with the introduction of the M.Tech. programme in 2019, strengthening its academic and research portfolio.
• Expansion of Faculty and Research: Over the years, the department has grown into a community of faculty members, research scholars and students working across diverse areas of chemical engineering. Faculty research has expanded into energy and environment, multiscale modelling, soft matter, transport phenomena, thermodynamics, catalysis and process systems engineering.
• Development of Advanced Research Facilities: The department has established sophisticated research facilities and equipment, including rheometers, viscometers, force tensiometers, particle-size analysers, zetasizers, nanoparticle tracking analysis systems, FT-IR spectroscopy, GC-MS and thermogravimetric analysis facilities.
• Interdisciplinary Research: Research activities have increasingly addressed applications in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, energy, advanced materials and environmental technologies, reflecting the department's interdisciplinary approach.
• Research, Consultancy and Industry Engagement: The department has developed sponsored research and consultancy activities with national agencies, ministries and industry, while providing students with opportunities for internships and research experiences in India and abroad.
• Present Academic Focus: The department currently offers B.Tech., M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes and has developed major research themes in fluids, granular materials and soft-matter engineering; catalysis and reaction engineering; thermodynamics and molecular simulation; and process systems engineering.
