Title

Department of Humanities and Social Sciences

Description

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) was established in 2009, shortly after the Institute began its academic journey. Although IIT Ropar is primarily a technological institution, the department was created with the vision of providing students with a broader understanding of human values, society, culture, economics, language and philosophy.
Major Milestones
• 2009 – Establishment: The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences was established in 2009. The early department had a small faculty strength and began its academic activities alongside the Institute's founding engineering and science departments.
• 2009–10 – Early Academic Activities: The department was already functioning during IIT Ropar's formative years. The 2009–10 Annual Report records Dr. Varadarajan Narayanan, Assistant Professor, as an early member of the HSS faculty. Teaching included courses such as Introduction to Philosophy, Topics in Philosophy, Introduction to Humanities and Social Sciences and preparatory English courses.
• Initial Academic Focus: In its early years, the department concentrated on providing undergraduate students with exposure to Humanities and Social Sciences, complementing their technical education with courses dealing with human values, communication, philosophy, economics and society.
• Expansion of Disciplines: Over time, HSS expanded from its modest beginnings into a multidisciplinary academic department. Its disciplines have included Economics, English Literature, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology and Management.
• 2017 – Curriculum Transformation: A significant milestone came with the implementation of a new B.Tech. curriculum from 2017, under which several Humanities and Social Sciences courses were moved from elective status to core courses. This reflected IIT Ropar's recognition of the importance of humanities and social sciences in developing technically competent as well as socially responsible engineers.
• Growth of Doctoral Education: The department progressively strengthened its Ph.D. programme, with increasing numbers of research scholars and research activities across its different disciplines.
• Research and Academic Facilities: The department developed dedicated research and teaching facilities, including the Language and Cognition Lab and Language and Linguistics Lab, supported by computational and statistical tools such as SPSS, Stata, EViews and MATLAB.
• Seminars and Academic Outreach: HSS has regularly organized seminars, workshops, lectures and international webinars, providing opportunities for students and scholars to engage with contemporary issues in humanities and social sciences. Its activities have addressed themes ranging from philosophy and literature to economics, language, society and technology.
• Interdisciplinary Research: With the growth of IIT Ropar, HSS has increasingly engaged in interdisciplinary research addressing socio-economic development, language and cognition, behavioural studies, public policy, sustainability, technology-society interactions, economics and management.
• Present Academic Focus: The department currently encompasses disciplines including Economics, English, Linguistics, Philosophy and Management, with research and academic activities also extending into Psychology, Sociology and interdisciplinary areas. It offers doctoral research opportunities and contributes substantially to the undergraduate curriculum of IIT Ropar.
