Department of Computer Science and Engineering

Title

Department of Computer Science and Engineering

Description

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) is one of the founding academic departments of the Institute. It was established in 2008, when IIT Ropar began its academic journey. Computer Science and Engineering was one of the three disciplines in which the Institute initially offered the B.Tech. programme, along with Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
Major Milestones
• 2008 – Establishment: The Department of Computer Science and Engineering was established with the inception of IIT Ropar. It was one of the Institute's three founding B.Tech. disciplines.
• 2008–09 – First Academic Session: IIT Ropar commenced its first academic session from the campus of IIT Delhi, its mentor institute. The first B.Tech. batch in CSE was admitted during this pioneering academic session.
• 2009 – Transit Campus: IIT Ropar shifted its operations to the transit campus at Rupnagar. The Digital Archive records the early CSE faculty, including Dr. Daya Ram Gaur, Dr. Apurva Mudgal and Shri Ashish Ahuja, reflecting the department's academic foundation during its formative years.
• Early Academic Development: From its beginning, the department focused on providing strong foundations in the traditional areas of computer science while encouraging hands-on learning, independent thinking and project-based education.
• Expansion of Higher Education: The department subsequently expanded its academic portfolio to include M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes, creating opportunities for advanced study and research in computer science and engineering.
• 2014 – Early Academic Achievement: By IIT Ropar's Third Convocation in 2014, the department had already produced multiple graduating batches. Abhisaar Sharma from CSE received the Institute Silver Medal, demonstrating the academic achievements of the department's early students.
• Growth of Research: Over the years, the department expanded its research activities into areas including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Computer Systems, Security and Privacy, Theoretical Computer Science, Data Science, Computer Vision, Networks, Distributed Systems and High-Performance Computing.
• Development of Advanced Facilities: The department has developed specialized research infrastructure including High-Performance Computing facilities, GPU computing resources, IoT and networking laboratories, cybersecurity and systems research facilities, supporting advanced computational research.
• Expansion into Artificial Intelligence: With the rapid development of AI and machine learning, the department expanded its academic offerings to include an M.Tech. programme in Artificial Intelligence, alongside its M.Tech. in CSE.
• Research and Innovation: The department increasingly adopted interdisciplinary research approaches, applying computing technologies to areas such as healthcare, agriculture, security and other societal challenges.
• Present Academic Focus: Today, the department offers B.Tech., M.Tech. in CSE, M.Tech. in Artificial Intelligence and Ph.D. programmes. Its research encompasses AI and ML, computer systems, security and privacy, theoretical computer science, data science and emerging computational technologies.
