IIT Ropar, or the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, is a public technical and research university located in Rupnagar, Punjab, India. It is one of the eight newer IITs established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, in 2008. The institute initially operated from a temporary campus but has now moved to its permanent campus, which spans over 500 acres. IIT Ropar offers undergraduate (B.Tech), postgraduate (M.Tech, M.Sc), and doctoral (Ph.D) programs across various engineering, science, and humanities disciplines. IIT Ropar has been consistently ranked among the top engineering institutions in India by various national and international ranking agencies. The foundation stone laying ceremony was held on 24 February 2009.
IIT Ropar currently offers a 4-year B. Tech. programme in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, Engineering Physics, Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. IIT Ropar boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure, designed to support both academic and extracurricular activities. The campus features modern lecture halls, well-equipped laboratories, and extensive research facilities. Students benefit from a well-stocked library, advanced computer centres, and numerous specialised workshops.
Student life at IIT Ropar is vibrant and multifaceted, combining rigorous academics with diverse extracurricular activities. The institute offers well-equipped hostels, libraries, and sports facilities, fostering a comfortable and enriching environment. Students engage in research, workshops, and seminars, and participate in several College Fests. Numerous clubs, including technical, cultural, and interest-based groups, provide platforms for personal and professional growth. The mentorship and counselling services support student well-being. Located in the serene town of Rupnagar, IIT Ropar provides a peaceful yet dynamic environment, fostering a strong and supportive community for its students.
Institute Student Mentorship Program (ISMP) is a student initiative of IIT Ropar, which aims to provide a comprehensive and in-depth knowledge to freshmen on critical issues like academics, co and extracurricular activities and how to bring about an optimum balance between them which proves decisive in shaping an individual's contentment levels in the institute.
To ensure this, every fresher is allotted a mentor who obviously is a senior student with substantial experience in a plethora of matters to guide the freshmen through the transition process. The mentors are selected through a rigorous process to make sure they can guide mentees to take informed decisions in all spheres.

It is a great pleasure and honor for me to serve as the Director of Indian Institute of Technology Ropar.
The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar was established in 2008 to provide a significant niche in the education and research of science and technology. Over a period of more than a decade, IIT Ropar has emerged as a leading institution in engineering, pure sciences and social sciences.
Today, IIT Ropar is positioned to make key contributions to the advancement of technology solutions and sustainability research and to help lead the way toward sustainable growth of technological resources. The institute is preparing the next generation of leaders who will carry this path forward in the years ahead.
The Institute is committed to create an ambience for nurturing innovation, creativity and excellence within its students. We, at IIT Ropar, strongly support interdisciplinary research and development for the benefit of Industry and Society.
We emphasise on developing all round leadership skills. We are proud to say that the Institute is ideally placed to exploit the synergy within the engineering and science departments at the Institute. In doing so, we believe the Institute will continue to create unique and novel programmes to make significant contributions to Science and Technology as a domain. We are confident that all our efforts will grow into significant epitomes of achievements in the larger academic parlance. Hopefully, our labors in all the major areas of science and technology will produce fruitful results in academic innovation, top-tier journal publications, citations and technology developments.
On a final note, I request all to take care of themselves and their families during this difficult time of COVID crisis. This too shall pass, and we will again embark on our journey to make IIT Ropar as one of the best academic destinations of our nation.

The institute, apart from establishing a robust teaching environment, is keen to facilitate and support cutting-edge research in variety of areas. This aspect, we believe, will enable the students to acquaint themselves with latest developments in their respective areas of study and pursue their own research interests. This would also result in a constant revision of courses that are being taught. The institute encourages its faculty members to initiate research work and provides an initiation grant and also the basic facilities for its sustenance. It also encourages faculty members to establish collaborative research ventures with other research labs and industry. In this regard, the institute is keen to establish the Central Research Facility. The institute has already started its PhD Programme, so that the research environment is further augmented, expanded, and made even more vibrant.
