Managing academics and social life
Life at IIT is not as glamorous as it may seem from the outside. The relentless stream of weekly assignments, quizzes, midterms, and finals keeps students perpetually on their toes. Alongside these academic demands, carving out time for coding or pursuing personal passions becomes a formidable challenge. This reality is often overlooked by those who haven't experienced it. However, let's be honest: within IIT, there are two main types of students, “the disciplined ones” and “the all-nighters.” The disciplined ones complete their daily tasks, revise lectures, and get a good night's sleep before exams. Conversely, the all-nighters cram the night before exams yet still manage to score comparably, if not higher, than their more disciplined peers. Your first task upon entering IIT is to identify which category you belong to. Once you do, navigating your path forward will be much easier.
At IIT, it is essential to transition out of the intense “JEE phase,” interact with people, and make friends who can support you in this new environment, far from home. Fun and relaxation are crucial components of a balanced life. Some students try to schedule every minute for studying, but this often leads to inefficient use of time. Overworking can result in diminishing returns, where longer study hours yield progressively less productivity. Freshmen often struggle to balance academics and social life, so here are some tips to help you achieve that balance.
Firstly, assign specific time slots to your daily tasks. After dinner is an excellent time for socializing since everyone is generally free from classes and out on “night strolls” at that hour. However, remember your ultimate goal: do not stay out all night socializing and then sleep through your lectures or study sessions. Joining a club that aligns with your interests is another great way to maintain balance.
At IIT Ropar, we have numerous clubs managed by dedicated seniors. Participating in club activities allows you to pursue your passions and increase your skill while meeting people with similar interests. Additionally, being active during festivals and other event preparations can help you build a network of valuable contacts which increases your social skill.
In conclusion, college life is the first significant step towards adulthood. For many of us, this is the first time we live away from the protective shell of our families. To avoid feeling lonely or depressed, it is crucial to establish a supportive social circle. Set your priorities and work diligently towards them. Do not fear making mistakes; these experiences will help you learn and grow. This is what IIT life is about: continually evolving into a better version of yourself. Wishing you the very best on your journey ahead, freshers.
