5th Convocation, IIT Ropar - November 21, 2016

The Fifth Convocation of IIT Ropar was held on November 21, 2016. The Chief Guest was Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. Prof. Sharma is a distinguished scientist with expertise in nanotechnology, thin films, nanocomposites, and soft matter mechanics. He has served as Professor and Head of Chemical Engineering at IIT Kanpur and was founding coordinator of Nanosciences and Advanced Imaging Centres. Prof. Sharma has over 300 publications, 15 patents, and extensive international research experience. The convocation was presided over by Ms. Lila Poonawalla, Chairperson of IIT Ropar’s Board of Governors. Director Prof. Sarit K. Das presented the Institute’s report highlighting achievements in academics, research, infrastructure, industrial consultancy, administration, and alumni affairs. Ms. Lila Poonawalla addressed the gathering, emphasizing values like honesty, integrity, humility, and continuous learning. Prof. Sharma spoke on the objectives of IITs, the importance of quality education, and the role of IIT alumni as global leaders. He encouraged IIT Ropar to solve complex challenges using global science for local technology solutions. Degrees were awarded by the Chairman of the Senate, with medals presented by Prof. Sharma and Ms. Poonawalla. Gold and Silver Medals were awarded to meritorious students, including Gaurav Mittal (President’s Gold, CSE), Amogh Agrawal (Director’s Gold, EE), and Nekkanti Akhil (Silver, ME)
