The Department of Physics at IIT Ropar has been offering a two-year M.Sc. Physics programme since 2015, with an annual intake of 25 students admitted through the Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM). The programme provides rigorous training in advanced areas of physics, numerical methods, and programming, complemented by a wide range of electives that allow students to develop expertise in specialized fields. Students also have the flexibility to take electives from other departments at IIT Ropar, enabling them to align their coursework with research interests and career goals. A distinctive feature of the curriculum is the year-long research project, which involves open-ended problems and use of advanced facilities, often leading to publications in international journals. Graduates of the programme benefit from the Department’s vibrant research environment and may apply for its Ph.D. programme, if they meet the eligibility criteria. Many alumni have pursued doctoral studies at leading institutions in India and abroad, while others have secured positions in research organizations such as DAE, ISRO, DRDO, and IUAC, or in industries related to lasers, vacuum technology, semiconductors, IT, and finance. Several have also joined government services. The overarching aim of the programme is to prepare graduates with strong analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills for successful careers in both research and industry.
