Title: Computational Modeling of Bone’s Adaptation to Mechanical Environment
Date: Friday, 05 April 2013
Time: 10:00 AM (30-minute presentation followed by question/answer session)
Venue: L-2
Abstract:
Bone adapts to mechanical environment. Metabolic bone disorders such as osteoporosis or bone/muscle disuse (as in individuals with a physical disability or after a prolonged space flight) causes bone loss making the bone more susceptible to fracture. Prevention and treatment of the bone loss is a major challenge. A few studies have found that the mechanical loading of bone can prevent and cure such bone loss. In-vivo animal studies have also concluded that elevated mechanical strain in bone induces new bone formation.
However, the exact relationship between the mechanical environment and the new bone formation is not known. For example, new bone does not
form always at the site of elevated strain. The aim of the present study is to assimilate the major findings from the in-vivo models and build a robust computer model that will fit most of the experimental data available in the literature. The model will also be inverted to predict the loading regimen required for a prescribed new bone formation. This computer model will be useful in identifying therapeutic physical intervention required to prevent and treat the bone loss.
