2016 Microsoft Imagine Cup National Winning Team from IIT Ropar

Team KudaPehchano, consisting of members Gaurav Mittal, Kaushal Yagnik, and  Mohit Garg, all 4th year CSE students from IIT Ropar are the 2016 Microsoft Imagine Cup National Champions in the World Citizenship category. They have developed, SpotGarbage, an Android app that can automatically detect and segment garbage in unconstrained user-clicked real-world images using state-of-theart artificial intelligence techniques.

It geo-tags the image, and sends the location co-ordinates along with the prediction to a central server. Municipal authorities can tap into their database to know where garbage is present to plan optimal routes for garbage collection.

They hope to make the garbage collection process rapid, robust and reliable, promoting a cleaner and healthier neighborhood. While the team has developed a smart phone app as proof of their concept, they believe that the solution can be extended to be used in CCTV cameras, drone surveillance, and traffic cameras in smart cities.
