Article Processing Charge (APC) Support

Article Processing Charge (APC) support is offered to eligible IIT Ropar researchers through the One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) initiative, which centrally funds APCs for selected top-quality Gold Open Access journals, along with additional APC discount schemes offered directly by select ONOS partner publishers. Nalanda Library assists authors in checking journal eligibility, registering on the ONOS APC portal, and completing the application process.

Open Access Publishing Support

What is an APC?

An Article Processing Charge (APC) is a fee charged by some open access publishers to make a research article freely available online at the time of publication. Under the ONOS scheme, APCs for selected top-quality Gold Open Access journals are centrally funded through the ONOS executing agency. Eligible journals are decided by the ONOS Core Committee, with the current criteria covering Gold OA journals ranked in the top 5% by CiteScore, SNIP, or SJR, from publishers providing access under ONOS. Several ONOS partner publishers additionally offer their own discounted APC pricing for Indian authors, independent of the centrally funded scheme.

Benefits of APC Support

  • Reduces or eliminates publication fees
  • Enables wider dissemination of research
  • Supports compliance with open access mandates
  • Increases global visibility and citation potential

Typical Eligibility

  • Corresponding author affiliated with an ONOS member institution (IIT Ropar)
  • Journal is Gold Open Access and ranks in the top 5% by CiteScore, SNIP, or SJR, from a publisher providing access under ONOS
  • Author registered on the ONOS APC portal with valid institutional email and ORCID ID
  • Compliance with the official ONOS APC Guidelines

Publisher Coverage

Centrally funded ONOS support applies only to selected top-5% Gold OA journals. Several ONOS partner publishers separately offer their own APC discounts:

  • ACM: unlimited Open Access publishing with no APC under the Read-and-Publish agreement
  • Wolters Kluwer Lippincott: flat 50% APC support on curated OA/hybrid journals
  • Elsevier: up to 80% discount on ~300 fully gold OA journals (GPOA pilot)
  • Springer: 75% discount on 64 selected journals (country-tiered pricing)

Library Assistance

  • Checking journal eligibility under ONOS or publisher schemes
  • Guidance on registering as an author on the ONOS APC portal
  • Interpreting publisher and ONOS instructions
  • Support with APC-related queries before payment
Library Support: Researchers are encouraged to contact Nalanda Library before making any APC payment. The library can help determine whether a journal qualifies for centrally funded ONOS support, a publisher-specific discount (ACM, Wolters Kluwer, Elsevier, Springer), or neither, and can assist with the ONOS author registration process. For direct queries to ONOS, you may write an email to Dr. Tarvinder Singh Handa, Assistant Librarian at subscriptions[at]iitrpr.ac.in or call 01881-235184.
