General Library Rules

These guidelines are intended to maintain a quiet, safe, and academically productive environment for all members of Nalanda Library, IIT Ropar.

41 Rules & Guidelines
  1. All students, faculty members, and regular employees of the Institute can avail the services of the Library.
  2. The Smart ID Card issued by the Library also serves as the Library Membership Card.
  3. Always carry your Smart ID Card and produce it on demand.
  4. Smart ID Cards are non-transferable. A fine of ₹300 is applicable for loss of the card; charges are doubled for each subsequent duplicate issue.
  5. The borrower is responsible for any misuse or loss of the Smart ID Card.
  6. Maintain the decorum of the Library and follow all rules and procedures.
  7. Users should maintain silence and avoid disturbing other readers.
  8. Reading areas are meant for individual study only.
  9. Personal belongings such as bags and parcels should be kept at the property counter at the user's own risk.
  10. The Library is not responsible for loss or damage of personal belongings.
  11. Proper entry of laptops and personal books should be made at the Entry/Exit Portal.
  12. Eating is not permitted inside the Library.
  13. Use of mobile phones is prohibited. Keep phones on silent mode and step outside to attend calls.
  14. Computers and laptops in the Library are to be used strictly for academic and research purposes.
  15. Browsing websites that violate institutional dignity or disturb other users is prohibited.
  16. Entertainment activities such as games, movies, online chatting, and similar uses are not allowed.
  17. Handle all Library property and resources with care.
  18. Damage to Library property may result in penalties, entry restrictions, and disciplinary action.
  19. No book or material may be taken out without proper issue procedures.
  20. Writing, marking, or damaging books and materials is strictly prohibited.
  21. Users should inspect books before issue and report any damage or missing pages immediately.
  22. Faculty and staff proceeding on long leave must return all borrowed materials before departure.
  23. All books must be returned for physical verification whenever notified.
  24. The Library reserves the right to recall any issued item at any time.
  25. Books removed from shelves should be left on the book trolley or table for re-shelving.
  26. Do not remove or unplug computer, network, or peripheral connections.
  27. Do not leave personal belongings or study materials unattended.
  28. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  29. Users should sit in a proper and decent manner; sleeping or lying on chairs and sofas is not allowed.
  30. Reserving seats is strictly prohibited.
  31. Photocopying services are fee-based and subject to copyright laws.
  32. Group study and discussion rooms are for academic discussions only and should be used in a low tone.
  33. Library-related programs in the Common Sphere require prior permission.
  34. Users must allow security staff to examine personal belongings and issued books when entering or leaving.
  35. Keep the Library premises neat and clean.
  36. Cooperate with the Library staff.
  37. Report any misuse of Library materials.
  38. Help improve Library services by providing feedback and suggestions.
  39. Feel free to seek assistance from Library staff.
  40. These rules are subject to revision from time to time in the interest of the Library and the Institute.
